Firstly, I wanted to pass on my sincere appreciation to all our Queensland members for your outstanding dedication and adaptability during these challenging times. While we hope the current lock down period will end as scheduled on Sunday, we will contact you as soon as we receive further information.

Today I wanted to make sure you were aware of some of the financial assistance available.

If your membership with AAPi is due for renewal or has recently lapsed and you are either facing financial hardship or are taking time off from paid employment, please just let us know. We are here to support our members.

Covid-19 disaster payment for employees – applications open tomorrow Saturday 7 August

The Australian Government has announced extra support for employees affected by Queensland COVID-19 hotspots and restrictions. This is a lump sum payment to help employees who have lost income due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Queenslanders in the 11 LGAs currently under lockdown will be eligible to receive $750 per week if they lose 20 hours or more of work as a result of the lockdown. For those who lose between 8 and 20 hours, $450 will be available.

You will need your employers ABN number and a myGov account linked to Centrelink to apply.

You can find out more and apply here.

The Services Australia website states that an individual must use any appropriate paid leave before they can access the COVID-19 Disaster Payment.

While this is implying that an individual must take leave accruals first, the following types of leave are excluded from this requirement:

  • Annual leave
  • Personal/Carer’s Leave
  • Long Service Leave

If your employer offers pandemic/COVID-19 leave, this should be used.

Business Support Packages

The Queensland Government will implement a COVID-19 Business Support Grant for lockdown-impacted businesses in Queensland. Your business does not have to be located in South-East Queensland, but you must have experienced at least a 30% reduction in turnover as a result of the lockdown. You may be eligible to receive a grant of $5,000 (excluding GST).

The grant provides support to employing small and medium businesses across Queensland impacted by the South-East Queensland lockdown that commenced on 31 July 2021.

We have written to the Queensland Government to urge the inclusion of micro or solo practices in this support package.

More information on eligibility criteria will be available soon and you will need to apply online with supporting evidence. You will be paid the grant funds within 2 weeks of being notified that your application has been approved. Grants will be processed in the order government receives them.

Further information will be available in the coming days here

Please feel free to contact me and let me know about any challenges or obstacles you are facing. As the Executive Director of AAPi, it is my job to represent you. You can contact me anytime by emailing [email protected].

Take care,

Tegan Carrison
