AAPi's Executive Director Tegan Carrison is featured in this article in the Toowoomba Chronicle calling for the federal government to increase the cap on Medicare-rebated psychology sessions under the Better Access initiative, which was reduced from 20 to 10 sessions in 2022.
Tegan emphasised that patients are hitting a “crisis point” as they exhaust their sessions, leading to worsening conditions and demoralising psychologists striving to provide adequate care, describing the cap as an “arbitrary government decision,” pointing out that other health services, such as GP visits, are not similarly restricted.
“We’re very much in a mental health crisis in this country… but unfortunately the government is just not prioritising access to services and care.”
AAPi is part of a coalition of psychology and consumer agencies all calling for an increase in the session cap, arguing that current limits leave patients “half-treated” and unable to achieve meaningful improvement. Sign the petition here.
