AAPi Director Daniela McCann is featured in this Tweed Coast Times article reiterating AAPi's calls for permanent Medicare item numbers for mental health services required after natural disasters such as ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, as well as self-referral to psychologists, removing the need for a GP visit.
Ms McCann, who was directly impacted by the cyclone, said she expects a surge in demand for support from young people in her community. “There will be young children and adolescents who experienced the previous floods being triggered as a result of this new disaster,” McCann said. “To be able to give parents and carers the reassurance that Medicare will cover the cost of the mental health services they need would be so helpful to their recovery.
