Biography:

Dr Aimee Maxwell is a registered Clinical Psychologist with AHPRA. Aimee is Credentialed Eating Disorder Clinician (CEDC), meaning that Aimee has been recognised as receiving the minimum amount of training and qualifications to work with eating disorders.

Aimee completed her undergraduate degree and PhD in Clinical Psychology at Griffith University. Aimee’s PhD thesis examined the factors that increase the risk of addictive-like eating, particularly the role of personality traits, like reward sensitivity, fear and anxiety. The results of Aimee’s thesis indicated that anxiety and fear were strong predictors of addictive-like eating in both children and adults, and that the role of family conflict and coercive parenting styles also amplified the risk of problematic eating in children. Aimee has experience within a variety of clinical and educational contexts and has worked with clients across the life-span, including children, adolescents and adults with varying presenting problems including anxiety, depression, ASD, ADHD, emotional regulation, social skills, behaviour management, developmental disorders and eating disorders. Aimee is highly experienced in group therapy and also works as a Psychologist in a group therapy context for eating disorders. Aimee has a particular interest in treating eating disorders, body image issues, self-criticism and low self-esteem.

Aimee is a warm, empathic psychologist and approaches therapy from a gentle, client-centred approach, working with her clients to set goals that are designed to improve overall functioning, wellbeing and disrupt patterns of dysfunctional thoughts and behaviours. Aimee has received specific training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy- Enhanced (CBT-e). Aimee also primarily works from an attachment-perspective, and is completing her core training in Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy, an evidence-based attachment approach effective for most problems, including eating disorders. Aimee primarily practices from an ISTDP framework, but may also drawn from CBT-e, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). In her spare time, you will find Aimee barracking for her football team- the Essendon Bombers, sleeping in on weekends, watching Simpsons reruns, and playing Animal Crossing on her Nintendo Switch. Aimee is also a self-confessed ‘foodie’ and loves to cook and be wined and dined at restaurants on the Gold Coast.
